Language & Culture – Gateway to Success and Employment

Date: Tuesday 28th May 2013 from 18.00 to 20.00 (6 – 8 pm)

In this event we discussed about immigrants working and being in Finland, from the point of view of language and cultural background. There were approximately 40 active participants. The discussion was so lively that we didn’t get deep in the topic. We decided to organize another event in the fall to continue the discussion on. This time we will immerse more for the employer’s point of view.

Objectives of the event

  • Open a conversation on the thoughts behind learning the local language and living in Finland as a foreigner
  • Discuss the importance of learning Finnish
  • Listen to the audience experiences of speaking or not speaking Finnish language
  • Complete the topic with cultural awareness

The presentation and discussion was meant to continue by comparing some thoughts and assumptions of the employees (immigrants) and employers (Finnish). Because of the limited time the discussion was cut short (we will continue the topic in our Semptember event)

The core of the second presentation was to wake up the cultural (mis)-understanding which happens when people of different cultures communicate, as well as to emphasize the importance of paying attention to the background from which people come from. Our behavior and interpretation of situations depends on what we have learned previously.

We heard comments from several immigrants and their integration processes to the foreign society and finding their places. We also heard some questions from the audience which they have faced while living abroad. We did some network tasks as well and got to know the fellow participants.
